NRI confused whether to return for old parents or to stay abroad with children: ‘I feel conflicted’

30-year-old NRI confused whether to return for old parents or to stay abroad with children: 'I find myself conflicted...'

A 30-year-old Non-Resident Indian shared the difficult choice he faces between caring for his ageing parents in India and securing a future for his children while living abroad. The anonymous Reddit user wrote extensively under a post titled “Living abroad as a only son: Caught Between Responsibility and Reality.”He explained that he is the only son of parents who are almost 60. While they are currently healthy, he worries about how his responsibilities will change as they grow older. He expressed his love for his parents and said, “I genuinely love them and intend to return to India in the future if they need me,” according to New India Abroad. But his decision is complicated due to some personal reasons whenever he visits India. “For now, staying abroad seems manageable. However, every time I visit India, I find myself conflicted about permanently returning. Apart from the usual challenges of living in India, there’s significant toxicity and excessive involvement from relatives on both sides of the family,” he said.Seeking guidance, he asked fellow Reddit users how they faced, if any, similar problems. The online community responded by advising the user to choose what works best for him rather than worrying about societal expectations. Many shared personal stories of returning to India or staying abroad.

What do immigration lawyers say?

Immigration lawyers say it is important to plan ahead and know options for keeping family together. They suggest looking into family visas or sponsorships to bring close relatives abroad if possible. This can help people balance caring for aging parents while raising children in another country. Lawyers also advise speaking to qualified immigration professionals who understand the rules, so as to avoid mistakes or scams.
