No entry ever: Indian man visits Canada to see newborn grandchild, harasses teens; faces deportation

The photo of Jagjit Singh released by the Canada Police.

Jagjit Singh, a 51-year-old Indian man, who came to Canada on a temporary visa to see his newborn grandchild, was convicted of criminally harassing two teenage girls outside their school. Singh was arrested and was given a short jail sentence. Now he would be deported and barred from re-entering Canada ever.According to Toronto Sun, Singh arrived in Canada in July on a six-month visa. He used to visit the smoking area of a high school and tried to befriend young girls. The girls complained that Singh tried to communicate with them despite knowing no English and approached them for photographs. He managed one photo with two girls as the girls though that he would leave the place after taking the photo. Singh sat between two girls and took one photo. Then he gestured that he wanted another photo. Then he put his arm around a girl who stood up and pushed his hands away. Singh was arrested on September 16 and was charged with sexual interference and sexual assault. He was granted bail within a few days but was arrested again after a new complaint surfaced on the same day. As he was produced in court, Singh pleaded not guilty to sexual interference but guilty to harassment.

Deportation and ban on reentry

“You had no business attending at the property of (that) high school,” Justice Krista Lynn Leszczynski said giving the verdict on the case. “This type of conduct will not be tolerated.”Singh’s lawyer told the judge that his experience in jail was shocking and long-lasting. He had a ticket to return to India on December 30 but the judge ordered his deportation.

‘Don’t even want to know what he was doing with those pictures’

“Part of what makes this so difficult is that the offender was someone who had come to Canada as a newcomer,” one of the girls wrote. “This betrayal has affected the way I see people of his culture and men who are older than me.”“I don’t even want to know what he was thinking or what he was doing with those pictures,” another wrote in her statement.
