Mother convicted of baby’s murder after blaming another child

In Glasgow, a judge found a woman guilty of killing her infant in a case that unfolded in Greenock, Inverclyde, on July 14, 2023, where evidence showed that the child suffered severe head injuries inside the family flat. The trial revealed that Nicole Blain inflicted fatal harm on her daughter, Thea June Wilson, and attempted to put blame on another child within the household.Reports from STV News presented details where prosecutors laid out medical records alongside witnesses, forming a clear timeline of events that unfolded on July 14, 2023.It was reported to the court that Thea had suffered three skull fractures, along with serious harm to the brain and blood in both eyes. Doctors explained that injuries of this kind typically follow forceful shaking combined with sudden collision. Not once did the medical data support involvement by a younger child, according to prosecutor Alan Cameron KC. Jurors also considered testimony from a social worker who stopped by the apartment that morning, shortly before everything unfolded. Inside, Thea was resting quietly in her crib at that time while Blain was showing signs of exhaustion. Hours afterward, once medical personnel had taken charge of the baby, the social worker came back to check on Blain’s condition. The witness recalled a statement in which Blain expressed anger towards another child in connection with the incident. The observer also described her as looking deeply agitated and distressed. Later in her defence, Blain explained to judges that she was asleep during the crucial hours and discovered her daughter on the floor after a neighbour knocked on her door. She described disbelief and shock upon seeing her daughter. She further stated that the trauma continues to haunt her and still remains vivid in her memory. Regarding earlier claims that she had blamed another child, she said that she lacked knowledge of how the injuries occurred.Despite her explanation, medical records were introduced to question its accuracy. Yet witness accounts further weakened the claim she made. Prosecutors argued that the injuries required force beyond any accidental cause. A large part of the jury found her guilty. When officials led Blain away, tears came, along with words meant for her father. Speaking on what followed, Lord Scott stated that the law prescribes life imprisonment for murder. On May 28, sentencing will be carried out by the court, setting the lowest duration Blain is required to spend in custody. Attention has shifted toward how medical findings shape trial outcomes, especially alongside close scrutiny of statements made by witnesses in cases involving vulnerable victims.Still, efforts in Inverclyde proceed alongside child welfare teams aiding impacted individuals. What has unfolded highlights how serious crimes against young children reveal deeper obligations held by adults in home environments.
