Midland Texas mass shooting: Mayor says shooter who killed 1, injured 11 was dead after hourslong standoff

Suspect dead afte​r West Texas shooting kills 1 and injures at least 9 others

At least a dozen people were shot in Midland Texas on Friday morning prompting an hourslong standoff though it is not yet known what led up to the mass shooting. The shooter wa dead, mayor Lori Blong confirmed. “We do have 11 known victims at this time. There’s at least one victim that is dead on the scene,” Midland Mayor Lori Blong said Friday. “The active shooter situation has ended, and the shooter is confirmed deceased.”Officers heard gunfire coming from a building in the 4600 block of West Wall Street, Police Chief Greg Snow said in a statement. “Efforts to bring the standoff with the shooter to a safe resolution are ongoing,” Snow said earlier Friday morning.Brenda Bowen, the manager of All American Collision, said she saw “a man (randomly) shooting at cars driving by.” Her business went on lockdown as the standoff unfolded. A SWAT vehicle broke through a fence, and officers ran into an abandoned building where the suspect was holed up, witnesses told CNN.Andrea Mendias at the nearby Loop 250 Collision Center said she saw about 20 SWAT officers run inside.After a sheriff’s deputy came to view the shop’s video, authorities told Mendias they believe the suspect was in the building next door and “may be tied to a random shooting from the night before,” she said. Midland is in West Texas, about halfway between Fort Worth and El Paso.FBI director Kash Patel said the agency is on the scene. FBI is on scene and deployed Special Agents and Victim Services personnel to assist the Midland Police Department at the scene of today’s shooting – we will keep the public updated as able,” he posted.”Cecilia and I are deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence in Midland. We are praying for the victims, their families, and the entire community. I have been briefed on the matter and commend the swift response from the Midland Police Department, DPS and all assisting law enforcement agencies,” Governor Greg Abbott said.”Susan and I are horrified by the shooting in Midland, Texas and are grateful to law enforcement for preventing this from becoming an even greater tragedy. We are praying for the victims and their families,” former US secretary of state Mike Pompeo wrote on social media.
