The donation arrives at a time when many charities are facing uncertain funding while demand for mental health support among young people continues to grow. Rather than backing a single programme or campaign, Scott has once again opted to provide unrestricted funding, allowing the recipient to decide how the money should be spent. As reported by Fortune, MacKenzie Scott has donated $20 million to Active Minds, a US non-profit organisation that works with young people to improve conversations around mental health and reduce stigma.The contribution is the largest single donation the organisation has received since it was founded, as reported. Unlike many major charitable grants, the funding comes without conditions on how it must be used, giving the organisation freedom to decide where investment is most needed over the coming years. Active Minds had previously received support from Scott in 2021, when she contributed $4 million. Active Minds expands school and college mental health programmes
Part of the funding will be directed towards programmes already operating in schools, colleges and universities. Active Minds intends to invest further in its Mental Health Advocacy Academy, aimed at secondary school students, alongside its Mental Health Advocacy Institute, which supports students in higher education. Both initiatives focus on helping young people understand mental health issues, develop leadership skills and encourage discussion within their own communities.The organisation has also indicated that the unrestricted funding gives it flexibility to respond to changing needs over several years instead of concentrating spending within a short funding cycle.
Youth mental health challenges continue to grow across the United States
The donation comes against a backdrop of continuing concern over the mental wellbeing of young people in the United States. Reportedly, figures published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for 2023 showed that roughly one in five American high school students had seriously considered suicide. A significant proportion also reported making plans to attempt it.Separate national health data from the same year suggested that around one in five adolescents aged between 12 and 17 experienced recent symptoms linked to anxiety, while depression affected a similar share of teenagers.The picture has been changing over time rather than remaining static. Mental health researchers reported in 2025 that severe anxiety among young people has risen sharply since the mid-1990s, with severe depression also increasing considerably across the same period.
Financial stress and mental health weigh on young adults’ wellbeing
Academic research has also suggested broader challenges extending beyond diagnosed mental health conditions. Work carried out by researchers from Harvard University and Baylor University found that adults in the 18 to 29 age group scored lower than older generations across several measures linked to wellbeing. Financial worries, physical and mental health, relationships and a sense of purpose all contributed to lower levels of reported life satisfaction.The findings challenged long-standing assumptions about when people experience the lowest points in life, with younger adults now reporting weaker wellbeing than previous generations did at the same age.
Scott’s distinctive approach to giving
Since 2020, Scott has distributed around $26 billion through her philanthropic work, making her one of the world’s most significant individual donors.Much of that funding has been channelled through Yield Giving, with Scott continuing her practice of awarding unrestricted grants. The model has attracted attention because recipient organisations are trusted to decide how best to use the money rather than meeting detailed donor requirements.According to a 2026 Forbes analysis, Scott has donated close to half of her personal fortune. Her charitable giving has consistently focused on organisations working in education, healthcare, housing, climate action and support for underserved communities.
Donations spanning education, housing and community support
Youth mental health is only one part of Scott’s wider charitable activity.Earlier this year, Meals on Wheels America received $70 million to support services for older people, including meal deliveries, welfare checks and social support. The organisation has said many local providers are facing waiting lists as demand continues to exceed available resources.Higher education has also remained a major focus. Red Lake Nation College in Minnesota received $72 million, while Elizabeth City State University, one of the United States’ historically Black universities, was awarded $42 million. That contribution pushed Scott’s total donations to historically Black colleges and universities beyond $1 billion.Elsewhere, Habitat for Humanity benefited from $436 million in unrestricted funding, while the Forests, People, Climate collaborative received $90 million to support efforts to reduce tropical deforestation.
