Kuwait enforces compulsory military service for male citizens under revised law; check out details

Kuwait has mandated compulsory military service for all male citizens upon turning 18, beginning with those born on January 1, 2012, under new amendments to the country’s national service law, state news agency Kuwait News Agency(KUNA) reported. The changes amend Kuwait’s 2015 national military service legislation and are intended “to remedy legislative and procedural gaps.”

What the amendments change

Under the revised law, the registration deadline for eligible men has been extended from 60 days to 180 days after turning 18. The amendments also introduce an exemption for an only son.Firefighters employed by the Kuwait Oil Company will now receive exemptions similar to those granted to members of the Kuwait Fire Force.According to KUNA, the amendments are designed to address delays in processing certain transactions and difficulties in handling cases that were not explicitly covered under the original law.

Where conscripts can be assigned

The National Military Service Authority is authorized to assign recruits to one of four sectors:

  • Kuwait Armed Forces
  • Ministry of Interior
  • Kuwait National Guard
  • Kuwait Fire Force

The decree formalizes the authority’s ability to distribute conscripts across these sectors based on operational needs.

Employment protections during service

The amendments stipulate that employed conscripts will retain their salaries, allowances, bonuses and benefits during their period of service. Their time in national service will also count toward their total years of employment. In a statement cited by KUNA, the army said the amendments reflect the National Military Service Authority’s commitment to modernizing the legislative framework governing conscription in line with operational requirements.“The new decree addresses observations that surfaced during enforcement of the existing law, prompting a review of certain provisions to ensure greater effectiveness,” the army said. The updated framework consolidates several procedural changes, including extending the registration window to 180 days, granting exemptions for only sons, aligning firefighter exemptions, and clarifying the authority’s power to assign recruits to designated security and military bodies. The amendments mark a significant update to Kuwait’s national service system as the country moves to implement compulsory service for the next generation of eligible male citizens, beginning with those born in 2012.
