King Charles US State visit: King to lay wreath at 9/11 memorial in New York with Zohran Mamdani

King Charles to join 9/11 memorial wreath-laying in New York with Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Britain’s King Charles is set to attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the 9/11 memorial in New York City next week, as part of his official visit to the US, his office confirmed. The event will honour victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, which killed over 2,600 people, including 67 Britons.New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani is also expected to take part in the ceremony alongside other officials, though there will be no private meeting between the two, Reuters reported citing mayor’s press secretary Joe Calvello.

No private meeting planned between King and NYC Mayor

While both leaders are expected to appear at the same public remembrance event, Mamdani’s office clarified that there is no scheduled private audience with the monarch. The participation is part of a broader official programme involving US and UK dignitaries.

State visit packed with diplomatic engagements

King Charles is scheduled to travel across Washington, D.C., New York and Virginia during his April 27–30 state visit. He will also address the US Congress, becoming the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.US President Donald Trump will host a private meeting and state banquet for the King and Queen Camilla during the visit.

US-UK ties under spotlight

The visit comes at a time of strained relations between Washington and London. Trump has publicly suggested that King Charles could help improve diplomatic ties, while also criticising aspects of UK policy in recent remarks.Despite political differences, the royal visit is being viewed as a symbolic effort to reinforce long-standing security and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries, with the 9/11 memorial event seen as a key moment of shared remembrance.
