Kick streamer Oblivion’s Family Mart encounter sparks debate over livestream etiquette in Japan

Kick streamer Oblivion is facing criticism online after a recent livestream in Japan led to an uncomfortable situation inside a convenience store. The incident happened on June 8 while Oblivion was streaming with boxer Ryan Garcia. During the broadcast, the streamer entered a Family Mart store with a cameraman following him. Within seconds, a store worker confronted him and quickly escorted him out of the building. The situation continued outside the store, where the worker held onto Oblivion and called the police. The streamer and the people with him appeared confused about what was happening. However, the store employee was upset that a camera had been brought into the store without permission. Clips of the encounter quickly spread across social media, leading to widespread discussion among viewers.

Oblivion draws Johnny Somali comparisons after filming dispute in Japan

When police arrived at the scene, they reportedly explained why the store employee had reacted so strongly. In Japan, filming people without their consent can raise privacy concerns. Many businesses also have their own rules about recording inside stores, especially when employees and customers may appear on camera. According to clips from the stream, the shopkeeper told authorities that he did not appreciate the streamer suddenly entering the store while filming. Although the encounter created tension, Oblivion was eventually allowed to leave and later rejoined Ryan Garcia. As videos of the incident circulated online, many social media users began comparing Oblivion to controversial streamer Johnny Somali. Somali became known for creating disturbances during his travels in Japan and South Korea, which led to legal troubles and public backlash. Some viewers felt Oblivion’s actions reminded them of those past incidents, while others argued the situations were not directly comparable. The controversy came only a day after Ryan Garcia experienced a similar issue in Japan. On June 7, clips spread online showing a 7-Eleven employee becoming upset after Garcia filmed him. That particular incident also set off talks on the importance of respecting local traditions and keeping their privacy intact when doing livestreams from overseas.Japan continues to be one of the top choices for IRL creators because of its bustling cities, distinctive culture, and sizable number of internet users. But incidents in which livestreamers get into trouble keep setting off talks on the proper etiquette when livestreaming and respecting local merchants.Oblivion’s small detour to the Family Mart ended up being a very viral topic once again on how streamers are supposed to conduct themselves abroad.
