Kentucky shooting: Two Boone County deputies injured while serving warrant in Walton

Two Boone County deputies were injured after being shot while serving a warrant at an apartment complex in Walton, Kentucky, on Thursday night, officials confirmed. The incident took place around 10 pm (local time) at the Towne Creek Crossing Apartments, located on Service Road behind a Kroger. Deputies had gone to serve a felony arrest warrant related to overdue child support when they came under what the sheriff’s office described as “heavy gunfire,” reported WCPO.According to WLWT, one deputy was struck in the chest and another in the leg. Both were wearing bulletproof vests at the time. The officers were rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Centre, one airlifted and the other taken by ambulance and remain in stable condition. One underwent a brief surgery, and their prognoses are “pretty positive,” Major Phillip Ridgell of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office said. “This is something that they, themselves and their families, this is a worst nightmare type of situation,” Lt. Ridgell was quoted as saying by WLWT.After the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment. SWAT teams were deployed, and gas canisters were used in the standoff, according to WLWT. Around 1 am (local time), evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes. The man was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, confirmed via drone footage, as per WCPO. Authorities have not yet released his identity.Fox 19 reported that Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge and Boone County Sheriff Michael Helmig were present at the hospital to support the injured deputies.Despite “multiple rounds” being fired at deputies, investigators said they did not believe officers fired back, WLWT noted. No other deputies or residents were hurt during the incident. A criminal investigation is now underway.
