“Just because he died.…”: Twitch star Valkyrae defends her reaction to brother’s death after viral outrage

“Just because he died.…”: Twitch star Valkyrae defends her reaction to brother’s death after viral outrage

Valkyrae faced backlash after discussing her brother’s death and their strained relationship during a livestream. While some criticized her tone, many viewers empathized with her experience of complicated grief. She later addressed the reaction, saying the past few days had been frustrating and emotional, and urged grace and understanding for those coping with difficult family relationships and unresolved loss.

Rachell “Valkyrae” Hofstetter is used to being in the public eye, but the last few days have been very hard for her. The YouTube and Twitch star got a lot of bad press after a clip from her February 20 livestream went viral. In the video, she freely discussed the death of her brother Mark that occurred in the recent past, their bad relationship, and his persistent alcohol addiction. What she believed to be a serious consideration was soon turned into a fiery internet argument concerning the way to cope with grief, family relationships, and in which way to demonstrate grievance in front of the world.

Valkyrae addresses backlash and the reality of complicated grief

On the internet the people reacted swiftly and in varied ways. The viewers were able to identify with the sheer difficulty in losing a loved one and never being able to correct the mistakes. Other individuals commented that she was too distant in tone and criticized her. The moment struck a nerve far beyond the streaming community, sparking a larger conversation about unresolved trauma and the unrealistic expectations placed on public figures to grieve in ways that are acceptable in public. During the stream, Valkyrae described a difficult exchange with her mother and her conflicted feelings about forgiveness. She said:”She (The streamer’s mother) was like, ‘You should forgive him.’ And I was like, ‘Well, yeah, I guess I have to because he’s dead! Like, I don’t know, this fricking sucks!’ Like, I don’t know. I was angry. And she was like, ‘No.’ She’s like, ‘It’s okay, just forgive him.’ And I’m like, ‘Fine! I forgive him. But what the f**k?! Like, I shouldn’t have to forgive him just because he died.’ I was like, ‘No, it’s okay. That’s fine.'”On February 21, Valkyrae returned to address the criticism, admitting the experience had been emotionally draining. She said that the support from viewers who understood how hard it was to deal with broken family relationships helped her feel better, even though the situation made her feel overwhelmed. “When you lose someone that you’re related to that you don’t have a healthy relationship with, there are a lot of people like that, like me, and I think it’s reassuring that there are a lot of people that are being empathetic towards my emotions. I’m really sad today. I’m not going to lie. I’m really sad. It’s been… it’s been a frustrating few days. Right?”She later added that the backlash hurt and that she needed to give herself grace while processing the loss. The streamer emphasized that people who have endured difficult family dynamics may better understand her reaction. Go to Source
