Indian-origin woman Sarina Gupta opens up about viral video of racist attack at Connecticut store: 'Can't believe she is a nurse'

Indian-origin Sarina Gupta opened up about the racial attack that she faced at a supermarket in Connecticut.

The Indian-origin woman from the viral video of a supermarket in Stamford, Connecticut, broke her silence and identified herself as Sarina Gupta, the woman who was told to go back to her country and to eat bacon by a white woman. The incident took place on June 2 and Gupta shot the video when a woman became angry as she was made to wait at the counter of Shoprite. The woman was later identified by social media users as Victoria Louise Mason, a nurse with The Nathaniel Witherell, a healthcare facility.Gupta said it was her birthday and she was at the store to return some items. The process was taking longer than usual, and that’s when she told Mason to go to any other counter, as she needed to be at the customer care as she was returning some items. Mason got angry and asked her to leave America when Gupta took out her phone and started recording. “Doesn’t matter, put me on Instagram. Put me wherever you want. Go eat your bacon,” Mason said and showed her middle finger. “Am I taking up your time with your return with your long return, you fat a**? Go back to your f**king country and (inaudible) and stay out of America. Go eat your bacon. Lord knows she has been,” Mason said to Gupta. After the video went viral and the identity of the racist woman came out in the open, her employer announced an investigation into Mason. “Nathaniel Witherell is aware of a video circulating on social media involving an individual identified as one of our employees. We are deeply troubled by the comments made in the video. These remarks do not reflect the values, policies, or culture of Nathaniel Witherell. We have a zero-tolerance policy regarding hate speech, discrimination, and harassment in any form. Nathaniel Witherell is committed to maintaining a diverse, inclusive, and respectful environment for our employees, partners, and the communities we serve,” it said.Gupta said she was shocked to know that the harasser works as a nurse because it is terrifying to think that she attends to patients of color. She said she was shocked when Mason launched her blistering attack on her. She said the staff of the supermarket was also not trained to handle such a situation. “Some of the employees were also people of color. And they were as shocked and scared as I was.” Gupta said.
