Indian-origin man convicted of attempted murder of woman and child in East London stabbing

Kulvinder Ram was convicted over a stabbing attack in London.

An Indian-origin man has been convicted over a stabbing attack in east London that left a woman and two children seriously injured last year. Kulvinder Ram, 48, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of attempting to murder the woman and child during the attack in Dagenham in October 2024. He was also convicted of causing grievous bodily harm to another child injured in the incident, PTI reported. The attack left all three victims with serious injuries requiring surgery. One victim remained in critical condition for several days after doctors feared they might not survive. The court heard Ram was detained at the scene by an off-duty officer from the Metropolitan Police Special Constabulary who was returning home from work.Special Police Sergeant Seff Serroukh said he initially believed he was witnessing a Halloween prank after spotting a woman and child running through the street covered in blood.“I quickly ran towards them and was immediately struck by the extent of their injuries and the amount of blood,” Serroukh said.“When I became aware children were involved, I knew I had to act quickly.”Serroukh told the court he confronted Ram outside the property and restrained him despite having no protective equipment or backup officers with him. “I had no safety equipment, no colleagues to assist, but as a father and a police officer it was just a natural instinct to respond without hesitation, even without knowing the risk,” he said.“As I approached the house, the suspect left the property and I managed to place him onto the ground with his hands behind his back.”He remained on the phone with emergency services while holding Ram until on-duty officers arrived.“Most importantly the victims survived and I’m just glad someone was there to help when needed,” he added.Detective Constable Lewis Whitlock, who led the investigation, said officers had no doubt Ram intended to kill the victims.“Our investigation left us with no doubt that Ram intended to kill those he targeted, and we are pleased the jury has reached the same verdict,” Whitlock said.He also praised Serroukh’s actions, saying the off-duty officer had likely prevented further deaths.“Without him, I have no doubt that Ram would have gone on to inflict further and most likely fatal injuries,” Whitlock said. The trial heard Ram had been suffering from undiagnosed schizophrenia and growing paranoia at the time of the attack, believing he was being watched through cameras. However, the court found he still understood his actions.Police said his behaviour had become increasingly erratic in the weeks before the stabbings, including allegedly threatening to kill one of the victims.Ram remains in custody and will be sentenced at a later date.
