India-China ties: Chinese embassy rolls out online visa portal; cuts paperwork, in-person visits

NEW DELHI: The Chinese embassy in India has launched the China online visa application system, allowing Indian passport holders to apply for Chinese visas digitally. The move streamlines the application process that earlier required multiple in-person visits and extensive paperwork.According to a report cited by PTI, Shenzhen-based online portal Greater Bay Area (GBA), eligible applicants can now fill out forms, upload documents and schedule biometrics online for tourist (L), business (M), student (X) and work (Z) visas. The system reduces consulate visits from two to one – limited to biometrics – and offers real-time application tracking. The Chinese embassy in India had earlier announced on its official WeChat account that the online visa service would be launched from December 22. Applicants can access the relevant portal for details and submissions. The digital process also integrates methods to enable fee payments in INR, which helps applicants avoid foreign exchange mark-ups, the GBA report said. The latest development comes amid a series of measures undertaken by Indian and Chinese authorities towards gradual normalisation of ties between two nations following the disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh last year. Earlier this month, India moved to expedite business visas for Chinese professionals, though officials have maintained that existing vetting procedures remain unchanged. India had resumed granting tourist visas to Chinese nationals in July, reversing a suspension imposed after the military standoff that began in May 2020.In recent months, both sides have agreed on several measures, including the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, restoration of direct flights, commemoration of 75 years of diplomatic relations, and steps toward visa facilitation. Direct flights between the two countries resumed in October.(With inputs from agencies)
