Sanford rammed his car into the church and then opened fire before setting the building on fire using gasoline. He was killed by the law enforcement in the parking lot. Sanford served in the Marines from 2004 to 2008 as an organizational automotive mechanic and vehicle recovery operator, He deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
