‘Exposing corrupt journalists’: Donald Trump reacts to BBC boss Tim Davie stepping down over Jan 6 speech row

'Exposing corrupt journalists': Donald Trump reacts to BBC boss Tim Davie stepping down over Jan 6 speech row

US President Donald Trump on Sunday responded to the resignation of Tim Davie as Director‑General of the BBC. The MAGA chief thanked The Telegraph for “exposing corrupt journalists.” On his social‑media platform Truth Social, he posted: “The TOP people in the BBC, including TIM DAVIE, the BOSS, are all quitting/FIRED, because they were caught ‘doctoring’ my very good (PERFECT!) speech of January 6th. Thank you to The Telegraph for exposing these Corrupt ‘Journalists.’ These are very dishonest people who tried to step on the scales of a Presidential Election. On top of everything else, they are from a Foreign Country, one that many consider our Number One Ally. What a terrible thing for Democracy!” Davie announced his departure on Sunday, effectively ending a 20‑year career at the corporation and five years in the top job. His exit comes amid a storm over a documentary broadcast by the BBC’s flagship series Panorama, which is alleged to have misled viewers by editing together different parts of Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech so it appeared he encouraged a violent march to the US Capitol. In reality the sequence omitted later remarks in which Trump called for peaceful protest. An internal memo by former BBC‑standards adviser Michael Prescott accused the broadcaster of “serious and systemic” bias, including over the Trump speech, coverage of the Gaza conflict and transgender issues. It was the leak of that memo to a major British newspaper that triggered both threats of parliamentary action and intense media backlash. In his resignation message, Davie said: “Overall the BBC is delivering well, but there have been some mistakes made and as director‑general I have to take ultimate responsibility.” His departure also involved the BBC’s News chief, Deborah Turness, who announced she would step away, saying the row had “reached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC — an institution that I love.”Trump alleged the BBC sought to influence an American election and accused Britain’s public broadcaster of bias as a result. BBC will now work through a transition period under outgoing chair Samir Shah.
