Every autumn, an ordinary Oregon forest suddenly starts smiling after foresters in 2011 planted western larch trees in a secret pattern among thousands of Douglas firs

An ordinary hillside in Oregon transforms into something extraordinary every autumn, revealing a giant smiling face that appears almost as if nature decided to create its own work of art. The seasonal spectacle is not the result of digital editing or a natural quirk but a carefully planned reforestation project carried out in 2011. Foresters intentionally planted western larch trees in a hidden pattern among thousands of evergreen Douglas firs, creating a design that remains invisible for most of the year. Only when autumn arrives and the larches turn a brilliant golden yellow does the massive smile emerge from above, delighting those who spot it and proving that even working forests can hold unexpected surprises.

How foresters created a smiling forest in Oregon

The giant smiley face is located on privately owned timberland in Polk County, Oregon, near Highway 18 between Willamina and Grand Ronde. It was created in 2011 by Hampton Lumber during a routine reforestation project following timber harvesting. Rather than planting every tree in uniform rows, the team deliberately arranged western larch trees in a circular pattern while using Douglas firs to form the eyes and curved smile. The project was never intended as a tourist attraction but simply as a playful addition to a working forest. The secret behind the artwork lies in the different characteristics of the two tree species. Douglas fir remains green throughout the year because it is an evergreen conifer. Western larch, however, is one of the few deciduous conifers in North America. Every autumn, its soft needles turn a vivid golden yellow before falling off for the winter. This striking contrast causes the smiley face to appear for just a few weeks each year before blending back into the landscape.

Western larch is one of North America’s rare deciduous conifers

Unlike most conifers that keep their needles year-round, western larch sheds its needles every winter after displaying spectacular autumn colours. Native to the Pacific Northwest and northern Rocky Mountains, the species is valued for both its beauty and its strong timber. Its seasonal transformation made it the perfect choice for creating an artwork that naturally changes with the seasons without requiring paint, carving or any artificial materials.

A light-hearted idea that became an internet favourite

The smiling forest was conceived by David Hampton, co-owner of Hampton Lumber, and timberland manager Dennis Creel. The pair wanted to add a touch of creativity to an otherwise routine reforestation effort, demonstrating that commercial forestry and imagination can coexist. Although the design remained largely unknown for years, aerial photographs and social media posts eventually turned it into a viral sensation admired by people around the world.

The artwork is temporary by design

Despite its growing popularity, the smiley face is not meant to last forever. It exists within a working timber forest where trees are harvested as part of sustainable forestry operations. As the forest matures over the coming decades, the trees will eventually be cut down, meaning the smiley face will disappear unless a similar pattern is planted again during future reforestation. Its temporary nature has only added to its charm, making each autumn appearance feel even more special.

A reminder that forests can inspire as well as provide

The Oregon smiley forest has become a symbol of how thoughtful design can transform an everyday landscape into something memorable. Without disrupting the forest’s primary purpose, foresters created a seasonal surprise that brings joy to anyone lucky enough to see it from above. It serves as a reminder that creativity can flourish in unexpected places and that sometimes the most remarkable works of art are grown patiently, one tree at a time. Go to Source
