Dubai is set to redefine coastal living once again as H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, officially approved a massive Dh500 million redevelopment plan for Umm Suqeim 1 Beach. This ambitious project isn’t just a simple facelift; it is a core part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to increase the length of the city’s public beaches by a staggering 400%. The goal is to turn this iconic stretch of sand near the Burj Al Arab into the world’s most advanced and sustainable urban beach destination, blending high-tech fitness facilities with serene natural spaces.

What is Dubai’s Umm Suqeim Beach project?

The new Umm Suqeim Beach is being planned with diverse users in mind, from families and youth to the elderly and people of determination, ensuring ease of access and enjoyment for all. Facilities will include:

  • Dedicated areas for night swimming and illuminated beachfront spaces covering about 130,000 sq m, encouraging 24/7 enjoyment.
  • Expanded parking with a 200% boost in spaces (totaling around 2,400), plus upgraded access roads from Jumeirah Street.
  • Smart systems powered by AI to manage utilities, facilities, and services efficiently.
  • Six main gateways and 10 mobility hubs, 11 taxi points, and dedicated zones for bicycles and e-scooters to improve movement and accessibility.
  • A 38-metre observation tower inspired by Dubai’s maritime heritage, poised to become a new visual landmark.

Sustainability is central, engineering measures, including a two-kilometre retaining wall and raised beach levels, will help address climate change challenges like sea-level rise.

Budget 2026

Enhancing public spaces

This initiative isn’t just infrastructure, it’s about enhancing Dubai’s social and leisure fabric. Sheikh Hamdan highlighted on social media that the project reflects Dubai’s commitment to boosting quality of life and public spaces while marrying Emirati heritage with global excellence. The upgrade also aligns with broader plans under Dubai’s long-term vision for public beaches, which includes expanding and enhancing beach services across the emirate to position Dubai as a top global coastal city. The redevelopment will further strengthen Dubai’s tourism portfolio, giving domestic and international visitors more reasons to explore the emirate’s coastlines while supporting wellness, leisure, and outdoor lifestyles.

What’s next?

For the average Dubai resident and tourist, this Dh500 million investment translates to a more vibrant, 24-hour outdoor lifestyle. You will no longer be limited to daytime visits; the beach will become a hub for fitness enthusiasts at 5:00 AM and a lounge for families at midnight. With over 2,000 square meters of new retail and dining outlets, the project will turn Umm Suqeim into a “staycation” destination within the city. By the time the project is completed, the “common impact” will be a seamless blend of city life and nature, where the world-class amenities of a luxury resort are available to the public for free.
