Canadian town passes landmark resolution against Hinduphobia, honours Hindu contributions

In a rare and symbolic gesture, the town of Wainwright in Alberta, Canada, has officially recognised the contributions of Hinduism and its adherents with a mayoral proclamation — declaring its commitment to diversity, condemning Hinduphobia, and celebrating the cultural, social and economic role of Canadian Hindus.Signed on October 7, 2025, by Mayor Bruce Pugh, the proclamation notes that Hinduism is “one of the world’s largest and oldest religions” with over 1.2 billion adherents across more than 100 countries. It celebrates Hinduism’s core values — “acceptance, mutual respect, freedom and peace” — and the contributions of the Hindu community to Canada’s progress in public service, politics, the armed forces, science, technology, medicine, finance, academia and beyond. The proclamation also highlights the widespread adoption of Hindu traditions such as yoga, Ayurveda, meditation, music, arts and food, describing them as integral to Canada’s cultural fabric and everyday life.“Canadian Hindus have worked hard, and been exemplary citizens of their adopted nation with deep respect for education, entrepreneurship, family values, due process and the rule of law,” the document states. In its most significant declaration, the town council “condemns Hinduphobia, anti-Hindu bigotry, and intolerance” and affirms its stance on equal protection and civil rights. It also welcomes the diversity Canadian Hindus bring and praises their contributions to the nation’s “economic and social well-being.”The resolution reflects a growing recognition of the global Hindu diaspora’s role in shaping multicultural societies, coming amid heightened concerns over Hinduphobia in North America. Canada is home to nearly 830,000 Hindus, who have increasingly become a visible part of the nation’s social, cultural, and political landscape.
