The release of Stranger Things season 5, Volume 2, has ignited divisive reactions across the internet from fans, particularly with one scene involving Will, played by Noah Schnapp. People were mixed on the scene where Wil comes out as gay in front of a majority of the show’s characters. Popular streamer Adin Ross now joins the group of fans who were not big on how the scene played out. In a clip from his stream that has now gone viral, Ross called out the decision to place the scene that late in the season amidst the threat of impending doom from Vecna. The show’s creators and Schanapp himself have addressed the significance of the scene and how it serves as a pivotal moment in the character’s evolution. While Ross understands their approach and has no problem with the character being gay, he questioned its contribution to the upcoming battle with Vecna and called out the show’s weird narrative structure.

Ross questions storytelling logic while creators defend long-planned character arc

In a clip circulating on X on December 29, 2025, Adin Ross criticized Will Byers’ coming-out scene, despite admitting he had not watched the episode. Ross suggested the moment was framed as the solution to the show’s central conflict, questioning how Will sharing his sexuality connected to defeating Vecna. He mocked the idea, saying, “But you’re telling me right now he has an intervention, tells everyone that he’s gay, and that’s how he beats the monster? That is the definition of Hollywood goyslop.” He later summarized the story structure as being weird and accused Hollywood of forcing a narrative that felt out of place even if the intention was good. The Duffer Brothers have consistently explained that Will’s arc was never meant to be just a plot device that served no purpose. In interviews with Capital FM and PEOPLE, the brothers have elaborated that the coming-out storyline had been mapped out years earlier, with Noah Schnapp even revealing to have been very emotional when he read the scene. Ross further clarified that he had no issue with the actor playing Will being gay in real life or the character coming out. He insisted that his frustration was with how the scene was placed within the story and how it failed to hit emotionally for him, as it did not contribute to defeating Vecna, which is now the main focus as the show heads to the finale. Fans can catch Season 5, Vol. 1 and 2 now on Netflix while they wait for the much-anticipated finale on New Year’s Eve 2025. Also read: Why did FaZe Clan members exit?
