3 new visa pilots in US Consulate in Kolkata: 'Shorter wait times for those who....'

US begins three new pilot programs for fast visa service at its Kolkata consulate in India.

At a time when getting a US visa is becoming tougher for Indians, experts believe the best consulate is Kolkata, as the US administration is trying out different pilot projects from its Kolkata consulate. It is not yet known whether these pilots will be implemented at other consulates in India, too. Kolkata Consulate is the oldest one in India, which came before Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad.

3 new visa pilots only available in US Consulate Kolkata

1. For 50+ parents

Earlier this month, the State Department rolled out a system of faster visa slots for parents aged above 50 who want to visit their children in the US.

2. Shorter wait times for genuine business travelers

The B1/B2 visa slots are seeing a lot of rejection across India as visa officials are extra cautious about people who are looking for to settle in the US coming on a visitor’s visa. Visa officers thoroughly check an applicant’s ties with their home country to determine the chance of their abandoning their lives in India. But the consulate in Kolkata has started an initiative where genuine business travelers and tourists will have shorter wait times.

3. New B1/B2 categories

Some applicants said they found new categories when they attempted to apply for US visa from the Kolkata consulate. The new sub-categories include: business professionals, parents visiting children, general tourism and travel, and recent visa refusal. “The new B1/B2 pilot at Consulate Kolkata puts American economic priorities first—and that means prioritizing YOU if you’re a business traveler or genuine tourist. Shorter wait times for those who strengthen US-India ties,” the consulate said. The announcements were made before Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit where he praised India and its ties with the US.However, slots for H-1B visa holders and students are scanty all across India, as the US administration started social media vetting for H-1Bs and students, making the waiting time gruelling for Indians.
