Greece’s Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities has confirmed the discovery of an ancient shipwreck resting off the coast of Andros, its cargo of pointed bottom commercial amphorae scattered across the seabed at depths ranging from 39 to 44 metres. A tip off from a private individual first led investigators to the site, and the Greek Ministry of Culture made the find public on July 31, 2026. Based on the style of the pottery recovered, archaeologists have dated the cargo to the late fifth and early fourth centuries BCE, placing it within the late Classical period of ancient Greek history, though officials have been careful to note that this dates the cargo itself rather than the vessel’s construction or the actual moment it sank.

How many amphorae the Andros shipwreck actually holds

Early estimates put the total haul somewhere between 600 and 650 amphorae, though the Ministry of Culture has stressed that this figure comes from an initial visual assessment on the seabed rather than a full, completed count. Investigators have also held back several other basic details for now, including the physical dimensions of the wreck site and how much of the original ship’s structure has actually survived intact after more than two thousand years underwater. Amphorae of this kind functioned as the standard shipping containers of the ancient Mediterranean world, typically used to move wine, olive oil and similar agricultural goods between ports. Nothing in the official material released so far identifies what these particular vessels were carrying at the time the ship sank, leaving that detail for future laboratory work to determine.

Three ancient amphora types found in the Andros cargo

Divers documented at least three separate amphora types among the wreckage: containers associated with Mende, with Peparethos, and with the so-called Solokha 2 style. One representative sample of each type was brought to the surface for closer study, though officials have not yet released a breakdown of how many amphorae from the larger seabed cargo belong to each of the three categories.Beyond the pottery, the team also recovered a fragment of a lead anchor stock, part of the ship’s original anchoring gear, along with a scattering of stones on the seabed that may once have served as ballast, weight carried aboard to help keep a vessel steady in the water. The Ministry has deliberately avoided confirming that interpretation outright, treating it instead as a plausible but unverified possibility pending further examination.

What comes next for the Andros underwater excavation

According to the Ministry of Culture, upcoming research will concentrate specifically on the cargo itself, and where it originated, rather than on reconstructing the ship’s intended route or final destination, a narrower scope than some subsequent coverage of the find has implied. Three divers from the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities carried out the inspection: archaeologist Dionysios Evangelistis, conservator Angelos Tsombanidis and seabed technician Louis Mercenier. No timeline has yet been announced for further excavation, laboratory analysis or publication of results from the recovered samples. For now, the Andros find remains an active, still unfolding investigation, one that has already added a fresh data point to the archaeological record of Aegean seaborne trade even as its fuller story, where the ship came from and where it was headed, remains to be worked out.
