'We will carry this movement forward': CJP calls on Wangchuk to end hunger strike as protests continue

The appeal came as a delegation of Opposition MPs prepared to meet Wangchuk at Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital to persuade him to end his fast.

NEW DELHI: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Wednesday appealed to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to end his indefinite hunger strike, saying his health was too important while assuring him that the movement over alleged examination irregularities would continue until its demands were met.CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke urged Wangchuk to call off his 25-day fast, saying the campaign for examination reforms would not lose momentum. “We request @Wangchuk66 sir to end his hunger strike. The country needs him, and his life is far too precious to be put at further risk. The peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar will continue until our demands are met,” Dipke said. In a post on X, the organisation reiterated its appeal, writing: “CJP’s Request To Sonam Sir, Your sacrifice has inspired a generation. We respectfully request you to end your fast and take care of your health. We promise that the fight for examination justice will continue with even greater strength until our demands are met. We will carry this movement forward.”The appeal came as a delegation of Opposition MPs prepared to meet Wangchuk at Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital to persuade him to end his fast. According to PTI, Congress MP Vivek Tankha, Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose and CPI(M) MP John Brittas are expected to assure Wangchuk that concerns over alleged examination irregularities and accountability in the education sector will be raised during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Wangchuk had earlier said he would end his hunger strike if Members of Parliament and political parties assured him that the issue would be taken up in Parliament. However, following the police action during the CJP-led “Sansad Chalo” march in Delhi, he announced that he would continue the fast until such an assurance was given. The activist joined the CJP-led protest at Jantar Mantar on June 28 in support of students demanding accountability over alleged examination irregularities, reforms in the education system and the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He was shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital following a Delhi High Court order.Meanwhile, the Congress intensified its attack on the Centre over the alleged NEET paper leak, demanding Pradhan’s resignation and accusing the government of refusing to allow a discussion on the issue in Parliament. The party also condemned the police action against student protesters and said it would continue nationwide demonstrations demanding examination reforms.
