'US stands with people of India': Sergio Gor pays tribute to Pahalgam victims on first anniversary

Sergio Gor

NEW DELHI: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday condemned the ‘horrific attack in Pahalgam’ and said Washington stands with India in its fight against terrorism, marking the first anniversary of the incident. In a post on X, he wrote, ” On the one-year anniversary of the horrific attack in Pahalgam, we remember the innocent victims and honor their memory as we mourn with their families. The United States stands with the people of India in their fight against terrorism.” The April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam last year had killed 26 civilians after terrorists reportedly segregated victims based on religion before shooting them in front of their families, triggering nationwide outrage. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure across the border. According to official details, nine major terror launchpads linked to groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen were destroyed and over 100 terrorists were eliminated. The operation led to retaliatory action from Pakistan, including drone attacks and cross-border shelling, resulting in a brief four-day military escalation before a ceasefire was reached on May 10 following communication between the two sides. Subsequently, Indian forces launched Operation Mahadev and tracked down and eliminated the three attackers involved in the killings.Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to the victims, reiterating India’s resolve against terrorism.“Remembering the innocent lives lost in the gruesome Pahalgam terror attack on this day last year. They will never be forgotten. My thoughts are also with the bereaved families as they cope with this loss,” he said in a post on X.“As a nation, we stand united in grief and resolve. India will never bow to any form of terror. The heinous designs of terrorists will never succeed,” he added.
