'UCC rollout, triple talaq ban, end to polygamy': Amit Shah rolls out BJP's key promises at Bengal rally

Amit Shah

NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah on Sunday outlined a series of major political and governance promises for West Bengal, including the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a ban on triple talaq and an end to polygamy if the BJP is voted to power in the state.Addressing a rally at Ranaghat, Shah said: “BJP, if voted to power, will implement Uniform Civil Code in Bengal, end polygamy, enforce triple talaaq ban.”He said the BJP government would take a series of legal and administrative steps once it assumes power in the state. The BJP leader also promised direct financial support and welfare benefits for women and youth, saying the party would roll out monthly assistance after forming the government.“The BJP government is going to be formed on May 4th. After May, the BJP government will deposit Rs 3,000 every month into the accounts of every sister and mother of Bengal and Rs 3,000 will be sent every month to the bank accounts of all unemployed youth. All mothers and sisters will not have to buy any bus ticket, they will travel for free,” Shah said.Shah also linked governance changes to law enforcement measures, alleging that cattle smuggling networks were active in parts of the state, particularly Nadia district and promised a crackdown if the BJP comes to power. “After forming the government in West Bengal, we will form a special squad to stop cattle smuggling,” Shah said.At a separate public meeting in Nadia, Shah highlighted the BJP’s national security record.“Brothers and sisters, as I have come to Nadia, first of all I want to pay my heartfelt tributes to martyr Jontu Ali Sheikh. On April 22, in an encounter with Pakistan, he sacrificed his life for the country, and later the Prime Minister carried out Operation Sindoor,” Shah said. He further attacked previous governments, claiming a softer approach towards terrorism and contrasting it with the BJP’s record in power.“Brothers and sisters, when Mamata and Congress were in power, terrorists were served biryani. In 2014, Narendra Modi came to power. When there was an attack in Uri, a surgical strike was carried out. After the Pulwama attack, an air strike was conducted. And after the Pahalgam attack, we entered Pakistan and eliminated terrorists,” he said.Shah asserted that the current government had taken a strong stance against terrorism and extremism.“PM Modi has freed this country from Naxalism, and now bring the BJP government to power—we will handpick and drive out the infiltrators one by one,” he said, adding that illegal infiltrators would be identified and removed if the party came to power in Bengal. He also accused the opposition of protecting illegal migration networks and reiterated that strict action would follow after the elections.Shah also claimed that the BJP had already made electoral gains in the early phase of polling and urged voters to participate freely in the remaining phases.“There will be an end to ‘goonda raj’ and ‘syndicate raj’ in West Bengal if the BJP assumes power in the state,” he said. The home minister added that the party would ensure stronger law and order and greater administrative transparency if elected. The polling for Phase I of the assembly elections concluded at 6 pm on Thursday, with West Bengal recording a significantly higher voter turnout of 91.78 per cent, according to the Election Commission. The second phase of the polling will be held on April 29, with counting scheduled for May 4. Go to Source
