'This is TMC’s technique': BJP alleges party symbol 'taped' over in Bengal's Falta

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Wednesday alleged irregularities during the second phase of the West Bengal assembly elections, claiming that its party symbol had been taped over on electronic voting machines (EVMs) at several polling booths in Falta under the Diamond Harbour constituency.West Bengal assembly polls — Follow live updatesLeader of opposition and BJP candidate from Bhabanipur and Nandigram, Suvendu Adhikari said he had spoken to senior leaders, including Union home minister Amit Shah and BJP leader Bhupendra Yadav, about the alleged malpractice. “The Election Commission has taken cognisance. If it works in this manner, then what is required will be done,” he said, noting that only around 35 per cent of voting had taken place at that point.BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya claimed that voters were prevented from selecting the BJP option in multiple booths due to the use of tape. He labelled the alleged practice the “Diamond Harbour Model” and called for an immediate repoll in affected areas. Malviya also cited specific booths, including one at Harindanga High School, and claimed that several others, such as booth 189, had been similarly compromised. Responding to the claims, the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer said any reports of tampering would be thoroughly verified. “If reports of taping of any button come in, that should be verified and noted. If true, those booths will go for a repoll,” the CEO said, assuring action if irregularities were confirmed. The controversy unfolded amid brisk polling across 142 constituencies in the second phase, with voter turnout reaching nearly 40 per cent by 11 am. Districts such as Purba Bardhaman and Hooghly recorded some of the highest participation levels.Meanwhile, chief minister Mamata Banerjee also raised concerns over the conduct of central forces and polling authorities, alleging that “new people” brought in were acting arbitrarily.
