NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Union govt through National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (Notto) to evolve model national guidelines to address concerns of gender, class and region, and provide for appropriate remedial measures. This order came on a PIL by Indian Society of Organ Transplant which, through senior advocate K Parameshwar, had complained that accessibility of the poor and marginal section to get an organ transplant surgery was limited as 90% of the hospitals and clinics permitted to conduct such procedures are in the private sector.A bench headed by CJI BR Gavai and and Justice K Vinod Chandran directed Centre, states and Notto to “evolve Guidelines for Donor Welfare of live donors, including measures for informed and voluntary consent, maintenance of a portal, mandatory follow-up through doctors and ensure they are cared for. This is to ensure commercialisation and exploitation of donors is avoided.”
