Before Khemka, the seat was represented by BJP’s Raj Kishore Keshari, who held it through the 2000s. Keshari won in 2010 with 54,605 votes, defeating Congress’s Ram Charitra Yadav by 15,599 votes, and had earlier triumphed in both 2005 elections as well as in 2000.Earlier, Purnia was a Left stronghold under CPI(M)’s Ajit Sarkar, who won the seat in 1995 by defeating SP’s Rajesh Ranjan by 1,615 votes. Over time, the constituency has witnessed a clear political shift — from being a bastion of the Left to becoming one of the BJP’s most secure seats in the Seemanchal region.
