Punjab’s anti-drug drive brings over 90,000 into treatment as govt pushes prevention and recovery

Punjab's anti-drug drive brings over 90,000 into treatment as govt pushes prevention and recovery

Balbir Singh

The Punjab government, under its campaign -Yudh Nashean Virudh, is yielding significant results, with individuals receiving treatment and rehabilitation support. The campaign, introduced on March 1, 2025, combines strict action against drug traffickers with large-scale efforts focused on de-addiction, counselling, rehabilitation and public awareness.Punjab health minister Balbir Singh said that between March 2025 and May 2026, over 90,000 people affected by substance abuse were admitted to de-addiction centres and Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment (OOAT) facilities across the state.‘Families and teachers are the first line of defence’Singh stressed that parents, teachers and local communities play a crucial role in identifying early signs of substance abuse before it develops into full-fledged addiction. He noted that warning signs often appear gradually and may include mood swings, irritability, declining academic or professional performance, social withdrawal, secrecy, sudden financial demands and loss of interest in hobbies or sports.Physical symptoms such as fatigue, red eyes, disturbed sleep, poor hygiene and unexpected weight changes can also indicate substance abuse. He also advised parents to remain actively engaged in their children’s lives and watch for behavioural changes. The Punjab government maintains that tackling drug abuse requires a multi-pronged approach involving prevention, treatment and rehabilitation alongside strict enforcement against traffickers.
