Punjab observes November as Martyrdom Remembrance Month to mark Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 350th anniversary; hosts kirtans, seva camps

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government has declared November 2025 as “Martyrdom Remembrance Month” to mark the 350th anniversary of the martyrdom of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru who sacrificed his life to uphold faith, humanity, and protect the weak. The programmes began on November 1, with daily kirtan, ardas, and katha being held in gurdwaras across districts. Officials said more than 1.2 million devotees have attended so far. Over 500 seva (service) camps have been set up across Punjab, many serving daily langar (community meals). The Health Department has organised 220 medical camps where around 1.4 lakh people have received free check-ups and medicines.The Education Department has launched a “Moral Education Drive” involving more than 10 lakh students from 20,000 schools and colleges. Activities include essay writing, poster-making, and cultural programmes highlighting the Guru’s life and teachings. The state government has also released a digital documentary series on Guru Tegh Bahadur, viewed widely online.On November 10, special kirtans and ardas were held across Punjab, with large gatherings in Amritsar and Sri Anandpur Sahib. District-level control rooms have been set up to coordinate arrangements and assist devotees.Chief minister Bhagwant Mann said Guru Tegh Bahadur’s martyrdom represents the defence of religious freedom and human dignity. Seminars and discussions on “Humanity and Religious Freedom” will continue in schools and universities through the month.
