'Power of money': MP couple's 'dream' wedding becomes ground for trolls; attacked with racist comments

A Madhya Pradesh couple’s wedding video became a breeding ground for trolls after it was bombarded with racist and misogynistic comment because of the difference in their skin colour. The couple had been dating for 11 years and got married last month.Images and videos from their vibrant wedding captured the couple taking part in traditional rituals and posing in elaborate attire. However, when they posted these moments on social media, the congratulatory messages were mixed with “jokes and memes,” as trolls mocked and criticised the pair, targeting the groom’s skin tone.”People were making jokes and memes and it felt very wrong,” BBC quoted the groom Rishabh Rajput saying. “People were making jokes and memes and it felt very wrong. “It was our moment and we had waited for it so many years. It was supposed to be a happy moment, but when I saw people’s reactions, I was really shocked,” he added. The bride also became a target of online abuse, with several commenters insinuating that she married him “for his money.””You think – is this is how people are perceiving us? When they say nasty things about him or call me a gold-digger, it irritates me,” the bride Sonali Chouksey said. In a post on Instagram later, the groom issued a statement saying: “Sorry to disappoint you. I’m not a government employee, but I work hard for my family and want to give them a good, dignified life.””From college till today, she has stood with me through every good and bad moment. People’s negative opinions mean nothing to me,” he wrote.
