One held, SUV seized after bid to mow down cops in Ramban

Ramban Police seized an SUV after its driver allegedly tried to run over policemen manning a checkpoint on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Kunfer, Chanderkote, early Friday. One suspect was arrested, and a hunt for underway for two others on the run.

The police team signalled the vehicle to stop for a routine check around 3.52am. The SUV driver, however, ignored repeated signals and allegedly sped up in an apparent attempt to mow down the cops, a police spokesperson said. Sensing danger, Constable Rasal Chand fired three warning shots from his service rifle. That didn’t deter the driver, who managed to flee the spot with two associates.

Police registered an FIR at Chanderkote PS under relevant BNS sections and launched a probe. A joint team of the Army, Ramban Police, SOG, and CRPF launched a manhunt for the three suspects and arrested one of them, identified as Altaf Mohammad from Udhampur. The SUV was also seized.

No terror angle had emerged in the probe so far, a police spokesperson said. The investigation officer and district mobile forensic unit collected evidence from the scene. Further investigation was underway.
