NEW DELHI: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has come out with standards for hospital bills, laying down formatting requirements to improve readability and consistency, including the use of legible fonts, and availability of bills in physical and digital formats. In a release, BIS said sample formats for both summary bills and itemised bills have been provided to guide healthcare organisations. Bills can be in both English and the regional language. “Adoption of the standards is expected to reduce billing-related disputes, enhance consumer confidence and support informed decision-making,” it said. The standards are voluntary in nature. Officials said they were prepared after inputs from domain experts.
