No more adjournments? Govt agrees to opposition's demands; Lok Sabha to discuss electoral reforms next week

NEW DELHI: An agreement has been reached between parliamentarians to run the House “smoothly” after the government gave in to the opposition’s demand to hold a discussion on the ongoing pan-India special intensive revision of electoral rolls. After two days of chaos and disruptions, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla held a Business Advisory Committee meeting with floor leaders, where it was decided that a 10-hour-long discussion on electoral reforms will be held in the Lower House of Parliament on December 9 and 10.Birla also decided that the discussion on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram will take place from 12 noon on Monday, and the discussion on election reforms from 12 noon on Tuesday.Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju informed about the decisions taken at the all-party meeting.”During the All Party Meeting chaired by Hon’ble Speaker Lok Sabha today, it has been decided to hold discussion in Lok Sabha on the 150th Anniversary of National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ from 12 noon on Monday, 8th Dec, and discussion on Election Reforms from 12 noon on Tuesday, 9th Dec,” Rijiju said in a post on X. Rijiju had earlier indicated that a solution to the impasse was near, saying the government is ready for discussion on electoral reforms. The decision comes after the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day amid persistent sloganeering by opposition MPs demanding a discussion on the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists in 12 states and Union Territories.Meanwhile, speaking in the Rajya Sabha on the opposition’s protest over SIR, Rijiju had earlier said, “Government is ready for discussion on electoral reforms. Opposition should not insist on a timeline.”Responding to him, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said, “The members had given notice under Rule 267 on SIR, and the House should start discussion on SIR.”Earlier, when the Lok Sabha resumed at noon, proceedings were adjourned within nine minutes till 2 pm due to continued protests. The Lok Sabha had witnessed only 15 minutes of legislative business after proceedings began at 11 am, as Opposition sloganeering forced multiple adjournments during Question Hour. Before the adjournment, Lok Sabha General Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh read out the list of bills to be sent for the President’s assent, cleared during the previous Monsoon Session. These included the Manipur (GST) Amendment Bill, 2025; Manipur Appropriations No. 2 Bill, 2025; Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Bills of Lading Bill, 2025, among others.
