Mohammad Shami divorce case: SC issues notice to cricketer; seeks response on wife's plea for higher alimony

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to cricketer Mohammad Shami and the West Bengal government over a petition filed by Shami’s estranged wife Hasin Jahan seeking increment in the alimony granted to her and her daughter by the Calcutta high court. The Calcutta High Court had previously ordered Shami to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh to his and their daughter. As per the court’s directive, Jahan would receive Rs 1.5 lakh per month, while Rs 2.5 lakh would be allocated for their daughter’s maintenance.During the hearing, the bench observed that the interim maintenance amount granted by the high court to Shami’s wife and daughter was “quite handsome.”Hasin Jahan’s counsel, Imtiaz Ahmed, told the court that Mohammed Shami’s total income amounts to Rs 7,19,54,010, and challenged the lower court’s decision to grant only Rs 50,000 and Rs 80,000 as interim relief previously.Ahmed said that Jahan earns Rs 16,000 a month while her monthly expenses total around Rs 6,12,905. Shami’s counsel, Sandipan Ganguly, however, argued that the petitioner had falsely portrayed herself as destitute. The couple’s long-running legal dispute has often unfolded in the public eye. Hasin Jahan said her financial dependence on Mohammed Shami forced her to seek legal intervention. In 2018, she filed an FIR against Shami and his family, accusing them of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and even match-fixing, allegations she later reiterated in court. Jahan initially sought Rs 7 lakh per month for herself and Rs 3 lakh for their daughter as interim maintenance. The Indian pacer had previously spoken openly about his marriage, describing it as the biggest mistake of his life and admitting that the experience had a deep impact on him.“Life teaches you many things. I admit it was the biggest mistake of my life. I don’t blame anybody, it was my fate,” Shami said on Rajat Sharma’s show.
