Mahua Moitra moves Delhi HC against order denying shared custody of pet

Mahua Moitra

NEW DELHI: TMC MP Mahua Moitra moved Delhi high court on Thursday, challenging a district court order refusing to grant her shared custody of a pet Rottweiler called Henry. The lawmaker had sought interim custody of Henry for 10 days every month. HC sought the stand of Moitra’s former partner and advocate, Jai Anant Dehadrai, on her appeal and asked him to file his response. Dehadrai appeared in person and contended that the petition should be dismissed at this stage itself, arguing that it had no merits. HC listed the case for hearing on April 29. In her appeal, Moitra argued that the district court’s decision was “bad in law and on facts” as it failed to consider that Henry was given to her as her pet “to be loved and cared for” and primarily resided at her residence, except when she was away on constituency duties, during which time the dog stayed with Dehadrai. Dehadrai has argued that the dog was purchased by him in 2021. Moitra contended that owing to her friendship at the time with Dehadrai, she was entitled to joint custody of the pet. Last year, HC had advised the parties to “sit together” and sort out the dispute. Both claimed Henry belonged to them and accused each other of “kidnapping”.
