Ladakh protests: Magisterial inquiry ordered into violence that killed 4; report within 4 weeks

NEW DELHI: Ladakh administration on Thursday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the September 24 violence that killed 4 people. The report of the probe is set to be submitted within four weeks.”Whereas, the District Magistrate Leh vide Order No. 03 JC of 2025 dated 26/09/2025, has designated the undersigned as Inquiry Officer for Magisterial Inquiry into the death of 04 individuals during the serious law and order situation and police action that took place at Leh on 24/09/2025,” an official statement said.”Whereas, the terms and reference of the inquiry are to ascertain the detailed facts and circumstances leading to the serious law and order situation, police action and resultant death of 04 individuals,” it further read. Meanwhile, Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of activist Sonam Wangchuk and CEO of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL), criticised the Centre, alleging police brutality against Ladakh residents following the September 24 violence. Drawing a parallel with colonial-era repression, she accused the Union home ministry of “misusing” the Ladakh Police.”Is India really free? In 1857, 24,000 Britishers used 135,000 Indian sepoys to oppress 300 million Indians under orders from the Queen. Today, a dozen administrators are misusing 2400 Ladakhi police to oppress and torture 3 lakh Ladakhis under the orders of the MHA,” Gitanjali wrote on X.
