'Is snatching your child's phone a crime?' Father of 3 minors opens up about Ghaziabad suicide; gets emotional on camera

NEW DELHI: Father of the three minors who died by suicide in Ghaziabad opened up about the incident as he got emotional on camera. He said that his daughters were “angry” because he had “snatched away” their phones, given their obsession with the Korean drama, games and reels.”I used to pamper my children a lot… They would watch Korean dramas, Korean games, and Korean reels,” he said.”Their eyes were swollen, which is why I snatched away their phones. They were angry about it. Is taking your child’s phone away a sin?” he added. Earlier this week, Nishika (16), Prachi (14), and Pakhi (12) tragically jumped to their deaths from the ninth floor of their residential building in Bharat City Society, falling under the jurisdiction of the Trans-Hindon police station.Police investigating the suicide of three minor sisters in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, said the girls had been “depressed” after their father took away their phones, noticing their obsession with Korean culture. The removal of the phones prevented them from playing online games and communicating with their Korean friends, and the father later sold the devices, authorities added. On the night of the tragedy, the girls attempted to use their mother’s phone but were unable to access the Korean app. The forensic team, which recovered the device, confirmed that there was no access to the app.Cyber crime teams are tracing the buyers of the mobile phones using their IMEI numbers to retrieve data from the Korean apps, DCP Patil said, adding that the police are investigating the case from multiple angles and awaiting the forensic science laboratory report. Authorities have stated that the case is being treated as a suicide, with the probe focusing on verifying the father’s claims about the girls’ alleged online gaming obsession and examining all related factors, including family circumstances. Preliminary findings, including a nine-page pocket diary recovered from the sisters’ room on Thursday, suggest a strong attachment to Korean culture and possible family discord. Patil noted that Kumar had purchased a phone for Nishika around three months ago and another for Prachi about 15 days ago.
