Is egg freezing only for married women?

Is egg freezing only for married women?

.

For decades in India, fertility planning has been closely linked to marriage. However, due to changes in lifestyle, career opportunities, and a better understanding of medical issues, the question, “Is egg freezing only for married women?” is becoming more common, says Dr Sreevani Kotha, Director & HOD 9M Fertility by Ankura Hospital, Hyderabad. The process of freezing a woman’s eggs is known as oocyte cryopreservation or egg freezing. It is a medical process where a woman’s eggs are collected, frozen, and stored for future use. Although the procedure was originally intended for women who are about to undergo chemotherapy for cancers or those who suffer from some medical conditions that may affect their fertility, it has now evolved into a widely accepted fertility-preservation option for healthy women as well.Fertility Preservation is about choice, not marital statusEgg freezing is not determined by a woman’s marital status. It is about preserving fertility at a time when the eggs are healthy, Dr Sreevani explains. These days, women are supporting families, pursuing higher education, building careers, and often taking on multiple roles. As a result, many women choose to delay marriage or childbirth for personal or professional reasons. However, biology does not always align with life plans. A woman’s fertility begins to decline in her early 30s, with a more noticeable drop after 35.A common misconception is that egg freezing is only for women facing fertility issues. In reality, many women who opt for egg freezing have no fertility problems at all. An increasing number of unmarried women in their late 20s and early 30s are choosing egg freezing proactively. It is a preventive step, not a sign of infertility. Eggs in this age range are healthier and more likely to result in a successful pregnancy later. Breaking social stigma and encouraging awarenessIn India, social stigma continues to surround fertility treatments, particularly for unmarried women. Many people still believe that egg freezing causes infertility or pushes women to put off marriage indefinitely. This mindset needs to change.Egg freezing empowers women by providing them with knowledge and options, it allows them to plan their reproductive future responsibly, without being pressured by age or societal timelines. Many Indian women are under social pressure to get married young and start a family, which can lead to stress and anxiety if they’re not ready. One of the ways to reduce fertility concerns is to freeze eggs. It gives women the flexibility to pursue their goals without worrying about their biological clock.Legally, adult women in India are allowed to freeze their eggs regardless of marital status, provided proper consent and medical protocols are followed. “9M Fertility operates under regulated guidelines to ensure ethical practice and patient safety,” says Dr Sreevani. As awareness grows, conversations around egg freezing are becoming more open and informed. Women should seek medical advice early, understand the benefits and limitations, and make decisions based on science rather than social pressure.Dr Sreevani concludes, “Egg freezing is not about redefining marriage or motherhood. It is about giving women the freedom to make informed choices about their bodies and futures on their own terms.”Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed in the story are independent professional judgment of the experts and we do not take any responsibility for the accuracy of their views.
