The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet on Sunday unanimously approved the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, with chief minister Mohan Yadav saying the law would ensure “equal rights for Ram, Rahim, Ravinder and Robin”. The Bill will now be introduced in the State Assembly during the Monsoon Session beginning on Monday.The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Yadav in Jagdishpur.Announcing the approval, the Chief Minister said the proposed legislation was aimed at guaranteeing equal rights for every citizen, irrespective of religion, and congratulated his Cabinet colleagues for unanimously backing the Bill.”Today, the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has wholeheartedly and unanimously approved the Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026. I wish to extend my congratulations to my esteemed Cabinet colleagues and to all of you,” he said.Yadav said the Bill reflects the constitutional principle of equality and is rooted in India’s cultural values.”We have moved forward in this direction, ensuring the Bill is ready to be tabled during the Legislative Assembly session commencing on July 20. For us, equality has always been an integral part of Indian culture and values,” he said. The chief minister claimed the proposed law had received overwhelming public support. He said a seven-member committee was formed on April 27 to examine the issue, invite suggestions and study the implementation of the UCC in states where it is already in force.According to Yadav, the committee received 9.58 lakh suggestions, while the government also gathered public opinion through rallies, print, electronic and social media. He said nearly 3 crore SMS messages were received during the consultation process.He added that 93.54 per cent of respondents supported the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Madhya Pradesh.Highlighting responses from the Muslim community, Yadav said 80 per cent of Muslim women and 40 per cent of Muslim men who participated in the consultation favoured a common civil law.”We have taken a resolution to ensure that everyone in society receives equal rights without any discrimination. Whether it is Ram, Rahim, Ravinder, or Robin, everyone should be granted equal rights,” Yadav said.
