Electronics output up 6-fold, exports 8-fold in 11 yrs: Govt

NEW DELHI: The smartphone in your pocket is increasingly getting a ‘Made in India’ backstory – and so are many of the electronic parts that power daily life. India’s electronics manufacturing has grown sharply over the past 11 years, with production rising about six-fold and exports jumping eight-fold, govt told Rajya Sabha on Friday, adding that India has now emerged as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer. Sharing official figures in the House, MoS for electronics and IT Jitin Prasada said electronics production climbed from about Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to nearly Rs 11.3 lakh crore in 2024-25, while exports rose from around Rs 0.4 lakh crore to about Rs 3.3 lakh crore over the same period. Mobiles have been the biggest growth engine. Production increased sharply from roughly Rs 0.2 lakh crore in 2014-15 to about Rs 5.5 lakh crore in 2024-25, while exports surged from nearly Rs 1,000 crore to close to Rs 2 lakh crore – a more than 100-fold rise. Govt attributed much of this momentum to production linked incentive scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing, launched in 2020. Under the scheme, mobile phone output rose from Rs 2.14 lakh crore in 2019-20 to Rs 5.5 lakh crore in 2024-25, while exports expanded from nearly Rs 0.3 lakh crore to Rs 2 lakh crore. Officials also said India has turned into a net exporter of mobile phones, reversing its position as an importer a decade ago. Till Dec 2025, the mobile PLI scheme attracted investments of over Rs 15,000 crore and generated over 1.7 lakh additional jobs, Prasada told Parliament. He added PLI 2.0 for IT hardware, launched in 2023, has so far led to cumulative production of over Rs 16,500 crore, with investments of about Rs 857 crore and nearly 4,800 direct jobs. With factories scaling up and exports rising steadily, govt said India is strengthening its position as a reliable global hub for electronics manufacturing.
