Delhi working hard to clean Yamuna, ramps up sewage treatment by over 100 MGD: Sirsa

New Delhi, The Delhi government under its intensified drive to clean the Yamuna has ramped up the sewage treatment capacity of STPs by about 100 million gallons per day in the last nine months, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said on Wednesday. He said this after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chaired a high-level meeting that reviewed water pollution situation in the city.”Under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and the guidance of Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, the Delhi government has taken strict actions, such as strengthening sewage management, to rejuvenate the Yamuna River over the past 11 months,” Sirsa said in a post on X.He said Delhi’s total sewage treatment capacity increased from 707 million gallons per day (MGD) in February 2025 to 814 MGD by November that year.During the same period, the city’s upgraded sewage treatment capacity rose sharply from 299 MGD to 735 MGD, ensuring that nearly three times more sewage is now treated as per improved standards, he added.Sirsa noted that while only 16 out of 37 sewage treatment plants had been upgraded earlier, the number has now increased to 28. The capacity of 12 newly upgraded plants has also been enhanced from 329 MGD to 436 MGD.He said the upgradation of the remaining sewage treatment plants will be completed by December 2027, with their capacity increasing from 79 MGD to 135 MGD, while sewer network work for 13 decentralised sewage treatment plants is scheduled to be completed by December 2026. The minister said Delhi’s water and sewage infrastructure had deteriorated due to years of neglect by previous governments, but the current administration is working around the clock to restore the system and fulfil its commitment of a clean Yamuna.”These are not just numbers on paper. They are directly linked to the health of Delhi’s residents and future generations. Clean water is not a luxury; it is the right of every Delhiite,” he said. PTI
