Delhi shocker: Teen househelp 'jumps' from 3rd floor, was 'caught' stealing Rs 3,000; family says she was pushed

NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old domestic worker landed in hospital after she allegedly jumped from the third floor of a flat in Joshi Colony, east Delhi, following accusitions of stealing money.Police claimed that the woman jumped on Wednesday evening after being accused of stealing Rs 3,000 from her employer. Her family, however, alleges that she was pushed. The incident was reported around 5.15 pm when police received a call from LBS Hospital about a medico-legal case involving a woman who had fallen from a building.”She was later shifted to GTB Hospital, and is undergoing treatment in the ICU and has been declared unfit for a statement,” a senior police officer said. The woman has been identified as Asha, from Jigman village in Chattarpur, Madhya Pradesh. She had been working at the home of 49-year-old Ashok Karnani for about a year.According to police, Ashok’s wife, Shweta Karnani, accused Asha of stealing money that day. Soon after being confronted, Asha went back into the kitchen and allegedly jumped out of a small window. She was critically injured in the fall. Officers reached the spot, and a crime team examined the scene. Four women from the Karnani family were at home at the time, and their statements have been recorded.Asha’s mother has rejected the theft claim and accused the employers of pushing her daughter. “Around 6 pm, I got a call from the police who told me that my daughter is under treatment. Her employers accuse her of theft, but I am sure they may have done something bad to her and forcefully pushed her from the window. She is battling for her life at GTB Hospital, and her condition is serious,” she said.Police said further legal steps are being taken and that the investigation will look into the exact circumstances of the incident.
