Convicted for son's murder, Gujarat man kills self while on parole

AHMEDABAD: A 50-year-old man convicted of killing his 10-year-old son died by suicide while on parole at his native village in Banaskantha’s Tharad taluka. The deceased, Damra Patel, a resident of Ranisara village, allegedly ingested poison on Thursday, police said.Patel was lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail after being convicted for the 2023 murder of his minor son, whom he beat to death while under the influence of alcohol. He was recently released on parole and returned alone to his village home. Locals said Patel remained withdrawn during the period, avoided interaction, and stayed confined indoors.According to Tharad Police, Patel ingested pesticide early Thursday. When his condition deteriorated, relatives rushed him to Tharad govt hospital, but he was declared dead before admission. His body was later sent for autopsy.Inspector A T Patel said Patel was reeling under severe guilt and emotional distress since the crime. “He expressed remorse over killing his son while under the influence of alcohol. He shared with some relatives and close friends that he was unable to live with the stigma and wanted to end his life,” the inspector said.
