Amid allies' JPC boycott, Congress drags feet on nominations

NEW DELHI: Despite the NDA government being in regular touch with Congress for the nomination of MPs for the JPC on bills on dismissal of jailed ministers and chief ministers, the party is yet to provide any names, in what is viewed as being reflective of pressure on it in the wake of the committee’s boycott by its key allies, reports Subodh Ghildiyal.Amid the possibility of a wider opposition boycott, Parliament has not yet notified the 31-member JPC to which Lok Sabha referred the three bills on August 20.A senior Union minister is reportedly coordinating with opposition parties. Significantly, in the wake of a fresh reminder, Congress has this week moved to nominate two members each to the two select committees of Lok Sabha on the Jan Vishwas Amendment Bill and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code Amendment Bill, even as it has chosen silence on the JPC.Congress sources said “there are chances of a boycott”. With SP siding with TMC and announcing a boycott, and AAP and Shiv Sena following suit, though Congress would want to join JPC, the issue of opposition unity seems to be in the way, especially after a friction-free partnership during the monsoon session.
