Probe ordered into Zubeen’s death

On Saturday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a full inquiry into the case. “I spoke to the High Commissioner of Singapore, Simon Wong, and requested a detailed inquiry into the circumstances leading to the untimely demise of our beloved Zubeen Garg. He has assured me of complete cooperation in this regard,” the CM tweeted.Sarma further said, “The state government will impartially ascertain all aspects related to his death, and all arrangements will be made if anyone wants to give any information or be a witness. The matter should become absolutely clear to the people of the state so that nothing is hidden regarding the popular singer’s death.”

FIRs against event organisers

The first FIR over the death was lodged at Morigaon police station, naming North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma. The complaint alleged that the duo, “as a part of a conspiracy, took Zubeen to a foreign country, on the pretext of singing but with the motive to kill him.”

CID to take over case

Since then, several FIRs have been filed across Assam. “Multiple FIRs have been filed against Syamkanu Mahanta and Siddhartha Sarma in connection with the unfortunate and untimely demise of our beloved Zubeen Garg. I have directed the @DGPAssamPolice to transfer all the FIRs to the CID and to register a consolidated case for a thorough investigation,” Sarma posted on his twitter handle.

Assam Police to question inner circle

The CM told reporters that those who accompanied Garg in Singapore, and “those who were present with the singer in his last moments, will be interrogated.”There are also reports that Garg was taken to a party the night before his death. “We are also trying to ascertain its veracity,” Sarma added.

Post-mortem completed in Singapore

Authorities in Singapore have already conducted the post-mortem examination. The singer’s body was formally handed over to his entourage in the presence of Indian embassy officials. “As the place of occurrence was not India, we will get the criminal part, if any, from that country, and if he was taken from Assam with a wrong intent, we will get this aspect from the state,” the Assam CM clarified.

Mortal remains to return to Assam

Garg’s mortal remains are scheduled to be flown to New Delhi late Saturday after embalming. His remains will then be taken to Guwahati on a chartered flight early Sunday. The body will first be taken to his residence, where his family, including his father, wife and other close friends, will pay their respects. Later, the remains will be placed at Sarusajai Stadium for the public to bid their final farewell.

Assam declares state mourning

The Assam government has announced a three-day mourning period from September 20 to 22, during which no official entertainment programmes, ceremonial functions, or government-hosted dinners will be held.Zubeen Garg, who had arrived in Singapore on Wednesday to perform at the Northeast Festival (Sept 19–21), was one of Assam’s most celebrated voices.
