The mortal remains of singer Zubeen Garg have finally arrived in India. The singer, who was in Singapore, to perform at an event, reportedly passed away in a scuba diving accident. After a post-mortem on Saturday, his mortal remains were handed over to the Indian ambassador for his final journey home. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reached Delhi to receive the coffin that arrived at midnight at the IGI airport in Delhi. He was accompanied by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita. The two were seen paying their respects and covering Garg’s coffin with a traditional shawl. The singer’s coffin was then put in an ambulance to be transported to a next flight to Guwahati. A special aircraft that was arranged to transport his mortal remains is expected to reach Guwahati in the early hours o Sunday morning, after which, it will then be taken to his residence. On the request of his family, his body will be kept at home for around one-and-a-half hours for his family members, including his 85-year-old ailing father, and his wife to pay their last respects. Meanwhile, a ruckus broke out outside the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport on Sunday morning as Garg’s fans, waiting for his mortal remains to arrive, suddenly broke barricades and started advancing towards the airport building. Police had to resort to baton charges to control the situation as hundreds of people broke through at least two barricades before being stopped in front of the airport by security forces past midnight, an official said.This comes despite repeated requests from the family and CM to maintain peace and order to ensure a smooth final journey to the beloved singer. Earlier, CM Sarma stated that the singer’s remains will be kept at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Sarusajai, Guwahati, Assam, on Sunday, September 21, for fans and well-wishers to offer their last respects.”The Government of Assam, with deep sorrow, informs that the mortal remains of Shri Zubeen Garg, an artist larger than life, a cultural icon, filmmaker, and the eternal heartthrob of millions, will be kept at Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex (Sarusajai Stadium) tomorrow, September 21, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, for friends, followers, and admirers to pay their last respects. All are requested to extend their cooperation in ensuring that the final journey of Assam’s beloved son is conducted with dignity and becomes a farewell to be remembered for all time,” the tweet read. A cabinet meeting will be held in the evening to decide on the cremation venue.Meanwhile, the Assam government has announced a three-day state mourning in the wake of the singer’s death.
