Zootopia 2 opens to just Rs 1.6 Crore in India

‘Zootopia 2’ opens to just Rs 1.6 Crore in India despite Shraddha Kapoor’s presence

Zootopia 2 is a global box-office titan, projected to shatter records with a massive opening weekend. However, India presents a stark contrast, with the animated sequel earning a modest Rs 1.6 crore on its opening day, despite a star-studded Hindi dub featuring Shraddha Kapoor. This underperformance in India highlights the unpredictable nature of the animation market locally.

Zootopia 2 is all set to rewrite global box-office history but in India the film stands as a surprising exception. Despite significant local promotional efforts and the star power of Shraddha Kapoor, who lent her voice to Judy Hopps in the Hindi version, the film managed to earn only Rs 1.6 crore in India on its opening day. This modest start sharply contrasts with the film’s monumental performance worldwide.Internationally, Zootopia 2 is estimated to cross a staggering USD 520 million in its global opening weekend, placing it on the path to becoming the biggest animated opening of all time. Even beyond animation, the film’s debut is poised to rank among the top five highest opening weekends for any film in history, putting it in the same league as the biggest blockbusters like Avengers or Avatar. The global frenzy around the film has been electrifying except in India, where audiences have shown minimal enthusiasm so far.Disney’s decision to rope in Shraddha Kapoor for Judy Hopps was expected to give the film a solid boost. The actress, with a massive youth fanbase and notable popularity among family audiences, was a strategic pick aimed at enhancing the film’s local connection. A special event was organised to announce her as the voice of Judy and few promotional videos were also released . Yet, despite the star-powered Hindi dub, Zootopia 2 failed to convert interest into substantial footfalls on opening day. To give a breakdown the Hindi version brought in just Rs 35 lakh while the English version contributed Rs 1.15 crore as per Sacnilk and rest coming in from Tamil and Telugu. While India remains an outlier, the global performance of Zootopia 2 is nothing short of historic. Its $520M+ worldwide weekend showcases the sheer strength of the franchise and the universal love for Judy and Nick. For Indian theatres animation though remains a very hit and miss sector, like Inside Out 2 which was once again a global phenomenon earned around Rs 32 crore in India whereas Mahavatar Narimsha went on the mint more than Rs 250 crore .
