Yash on the pressure to play Raavan in Ramayana

Yash says the biggest challenge for playing Raavan in 'Ramayana' was to find his own interpretation when people already know about him and have seen it on-screen many times: 'It's an extra pressure'

At the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), the team behind ‘Ramayana’ came together to unveil the trailer and discuss the film. One saw Ranbir Kapoor, Yash along with director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Namit Malhotra at the Comic-Con. During an interview, Yash spoke about getting into the character of Raavan. As the trailer dropped, fans lauded him and thought he’s the best actor to be cast for the part.Speaking about Ravana’s significance in the story, Yash said during an interview with IGN, “To tell a story, you need good and bad. Good and evil. So, the most important aspect of this particular story is Ravana being going out of control in terms of power and he’s driven by vengeance. He’s driven by wrong things. So, that is where I think the story becomes interesting. Like if you see deeply, if you observe the story, when you know, you’ll find it out.”He further explained how the contrast between Lord Rama and Ravana shapes the narrative. “The way both the characters are constructed or the way the story entails is Rama, Lord Rama is somebody who is born as a king. But he goes into situations where he has to lose everything and then he has to regain all the powers with his behaviour or the kind of action he takes. But Ravana starts with nothing. He becomes powerful. And then sometimes, like they say, when you fight a demon, you end up becoming a bigger one. Like, it’s you have to be very careful with it. So, Ravana is somebody who is actually very talented. He’s mastered many arts, but eventually, he ends up becoming a person who can’t control his power. So, that is where the story is interesting, and I think the contrast is very interesting in the story.”Yash also spoke about the emotional connection he has with the story, having grown up listening to it as a child. “That’s the exciting part, because as a kid, we have all heard this story. Probably the first story I’ve heard as a kid. My grandfather used to tell me these stories,” he said. When asked about the biggest challenge in portraying character, Yash said, “You have your imagination and you have seen so many people have depicted this in many ways. So what do you bring in as an actor and what is your understanding of that character was challenging and I think my director and the writers have kind of given me that space so I could play this character in a very different way and it was very challenging and exciting as well.”He added, “If you know the characters, and everybody’s aware of it, then it becomes a very challenging part. Because if it’s a new film, you’re telling a new story, whatever you do, that will become the character. But if people already have some imagination about it, and so many people have played it in different ways, then it’s an extra pressure for an actor. But I’ve stuck to very simple basics to understand what made him do such kind of things. So, the intent was more important. I’ve gone behind that, and I think I’ve kind of given a different take on it. Hopefully, people will like it.”‘Ramayana’ is written by Ravi Udyawar, Shridhar Raghavan and Nitesh Tiwari, with Tiwari also directing the film. The film features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, while Yash essays the role of Ravana. The ensemble cast also includes Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Kunal Kapoor as Indra Dev, Arun Govil as Dasharatha, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, and Vivek Oberoi as Vidyutjihva.Conceived as a two-part cinematic saga, ‘Ramayana Part 1’ is scheduled to arrive in theatres during Diwali 2026, with ‘Ramayana Part 2’ set to follow in Diwali 2027. Ahead of its release, audiences can already catch the film’s first official trailer, which was recently unveiled. Go to Source
