Robert Redford, the actor, director, and cultural icon, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89. He reportedly died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Utah.News of his demise was shared via a statement that read, “Robert Redford passed away in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by his loved ones. He will be missed deeply. The family requests privacy.”However, no specific cause of death has been revealed

Personal life

Redford, popularly known as Hollywood’s golden boy, made headlines for his films, social causes and also his personal life. His first great romance was with Lola Van Wagenen, who he married in 1958 and went on to welcome four children together – Scott, Shauna, James, and Amy.However, tragedy struck the family after Scott died as an infant in 1959, while James, a filmmaker and activist, passed away in 2020 after a long illness.Redford and Lola’s three decade-long marriage crumbled over time and the couple amicably parted ways in 1985. Their daughter Amy would later call the divorce “the hardest episode she has ever had to live through.”

Second marriage

After the separation, Redford poured himself into work and creative expression. But his personal life took a turn for the better when he met German painter Sibylle Szaggars. While they began as friends, the two grew close and went on to officially wed in 2009 in a quiet ceremony in Germany.

Following his passing, Redford, leaves behind not only a towering legacy in cinema but also an estimated net worth of $200 million as of 2025, according to the Richlist. Unconfirmed industry reports on xcatalunya, state that his widow, Sibylle becomes the main heir to his milti-million dollar fortune.His wealth was built over nearly seven decades as an actor, director, producer, and founder of the Sundance Film Festival.

Career earnings and film salaries

Early in his career, Redford fetched an impressive $500,000 for ‘The Sting’ (1973), in which he co-stared with Paul Newman. This is reported to be estimated around $3.5 million today. His salary rose to $2 million for ‘A Bridge Too Far’ (1977) and $3.5 million for ‘The Electric Horseman’ (1979).By the 1990s, Redford was earning huge paycheques, of over $4 million for ‘Indecent Proposal’ (1993). He secured his career-high base salary of $11 million for ‘The Last Castle’ (2001). In 2014, he reportedly earned around $4 million for his supporting role as Alexander Pierce in Marvel’s ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, joining the superhero franchise at the age of 76.
