His first great romance was with Lola Van Wagenen, who he married in 1958 and went on to welcome four children together – Scott, Shauna, James, and Amy.However, tragedy struck the family after Scott died as an infant in 1959, while James, a filmmaker and activist, passed away in 2020 after a long illness.Redford and Lola’s three decade-long marriage crumbled over time and the couple amicably parted ways in 1985. Their daughter Amy would later call the divorce “the hardest episode she has ever had to live through.”

After the separation, Redford poured himself into work and creative expression. But his personal life took a turn for the better when he met German painter Sibylle Szaggars. While they began as friends, the two grew close and went on to officially wed in 2009 in a quiet ceremony in Germany.

He secured his career-high base salary of $11 million for ‘The Last Castle’ (2001). In 2014, he reportedly earned around $4 million for his supporting role as Alexander Pierce in Marvel’s ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, joining the superhero franchise at the age of 76.
